Sorting units are facilities with specific equipment that ensure the mechanical and manual separation of all materials received that have been selectively collected from the population. The separation of the various types of materials allows this waste to be sent to the recycling industry with the necessary quality requirements. In this way, recyclable materials separated by the population and placed in recycling bins (or collected by another system) can be transformed into new products in the future.
Algar has two packaging sorting units of different sizes and capacities, which carry out this meticulous task with quality and rigour. One is located at the Barlavento Landfill in Portimão and the other at the Faro/Loulé/Olhão Transfer Station in the municipality of Loulé, thus covering the entire Algarve region. In 2024, 42,000 tonnes of paper, glass, plastic and metal were processed and sent for recycling, saving resources for the country and the planet.
