When we think about recycling, many questions arise for which we do not always have immediate answers. The EGF Group has a new service that will help clarify various issues.

The Recycling Hotline is a PUBLIC, FREE, NATIONAL service that was created to provide effective responses to citizens, namely to answer questions, requests for information, suggestions, complaints, compliments, and service requests related to the collection and treatment of urban waste.

The campaigns – Ecovalor, Toneladas de Ajuda, EcoEventos, EcoPraias and Mercado a Reciclar – enable us to reach various audiences and challenge citizens to recycle everything, always and everywhere. In all of them, it is possible to quantify the packaging recycled and measure results.

SCHOOLS IN THE ALGARVE RECYCLE OVER 1,191 TONNES OF PACKAGING
The “Recycle and Win” school competition, part of Algar’s Ecovalor Programme, achieved record results in the 2025/2026 academic year, with the 190 schools and 13,058 pupils taking part in this edition sending more than 1,191 tonnes of recyclable packaging for recovery. Compared with the previous academic year, overall growth stood at around 12 per cent, reflecting the strong commitment of the Algarve’s educational community to recycling and the correct separation of waste. During the 2025/2026 academic year, participating schools handed in 373 tonnes of glass, 447 tonnes of paper and cardboard, and 371 tonnes of plastic and metal. In total, 125 tonnes more recyclable packaging was recovered than in the previous academic year.

SUMMER CALLS FOR EXTRA EFFORT: ALGAR STEPS UP OPERATIONS AND CALLS FOR EVERYONE’S COOPERATION
During this summer period, the increase in population and tourist activity in the Algarve also translates into greater waste production. To meet this challenge, Algar and municipal teams are making an additional effort, with more people and resources on the ground, reinforcing collection, cleaning and sanitation operations. But this is an effort that requires everyone's collaboration: correctly separating waste and placing it in the appropriate containers are essential steps to keep the region cleaner and more sustainable. In this context, Algar has an ongoing operational reinforcement for the summer of 2026, with the aim of responding to the significant increase in the production of recyclable waste associated with the bathing season, seasonal and population growth, and the increase in economic and tourist activity.

ALGAR brings environmental education to over 3,500 pupils during Children and the Environment Week in Olhão
ALGAR will be taking part in the 19th edition of Children and the Environment Week, organised by the Municipality of Olhão, with the aim of raising awareness among younger generations of the importance of proper waste management, recycling and adopting sustainable behaviours. The initiative will take place on 28 and 29 May and 1, 2 and 3 June, under the theme “Growing Up and Caring for the Climate to Change”. The initiative involves all the nursery schools and primary school classes in the municipality, bringing together around 3,500 children, with the aim of marking World Children’s Day and World Environment Day through a series of awareness-raising and environmental education activities.
